Why?
Yes, why should a middle-aged, white, heterosexual man living in the Western world and working in an office turn to blogging?
I must seem like the embodiment of dull, boring normalcy. What on earth can a guy like me write that would be useful to the rest of the world?
Well.
There is no such thing as dull, boring normalcy
Everyone has raging battles to fight, deep ravines to cross, frightening monsters to face – and small to glorious victories to celebrate, most of them kept secret.
Millions of dreams, hopes, and desires are left unfulfilled, millions of wounds never healed, and misery too often accepted as the gold standard of emotions.
But I’m a deliberate one. I wasn’t for most of my life. But when I decided to change my life twenty-some years ago, I had to become one. I have made massive changes in my life and am still in the process.
It’s dawned on me that I have a purpose and mission in life—a road I must commit to following.
Why is this my mission
- I’m a troubleshooter by birth and heart. I’ve always tried to connect all the small dots to a bigger picture, to find causes and effects, patterns and solutions.
- This allows me to learn from my experiences, and I’ve always loved to learn.
- I’m a good communicator. I know how to make things relevant, understandable, and available to others.
- I’m not a typical tough guy. But I’m a rugged weed, a deliberate one. I never give up and want to show others they don’t have to.
- I’ve lived for a while and seen immense changes in the world, technology, culture, and how people think. Sometimes, this gives me a good bird’ s-eye perspective on things happening now and in the past.
So, I have some talents and resources and feel responsible for not squandering them.
Who I am
- I was born Norwegian and lived in Norway for 56 years. I’m now living in the UK.
- I have a bachelor’s degree in technology and business administration.
- I worked in IT for decades, including 20 years in various managerial positions.
- I am now an Information Management Assistant at the Lake District National Park Authority.
None of this is directly relevant to what I’m doing on this website, except that it has given me a wide range of professional and personal experience.
More importantly, I’m also a husband, father, grandfather, writer, songwriter, and lifelong, ceaselessly curious student.
